What Is a Nicotine Pouch?
A small white sachet, held between lip and gum, containing nicotine and no tobacco leaf. Here is what that means in practice.
· 2 min read
A nicotine pouch is a small, tobacco-free sachet placed between the lip and gum, from which nicotine is absorbed through the lining of the mouth.
What is actually in one
A pouch contains nicotine, a plant fibre or cellulose filler to give it shape, a sweetener, flavouring, and a pH adjuster. There is no tobacco leaf, which is what separates a pouch from snus.
Strength is printed on the tin in milligrams per pouch. That number describes how much nicotine the pouch contains, not how much reaches you — that depends on how long you keep it in and where you place it.
How people use them
A pouch sits under the upper lip and is usually kept there for between twenty minutes and an hour. Nicotine crosses the lining of the mouth over that time rather than arriving all at once, which is why the experience differs from smoking.
Because a pouch is silent and leaves nothing to dispose of publicly, use tends to spread into settings where smoking never went: meetings, driving, the hour before sleep. That spread is the part people most often lose track of.
Why the record matters more than the count
Nicotine is the substance that sustains dependence, and the pattern of use is what makes it difficult to change. A tally of pouches per day tells you the volume. It does not tell you which pouch you would miss.
Writing down the time and the moment before each pouch turns a habit into something you can read. Most people find their use clusters around a handful of specific cues rather than spreading evenly through the day, and those clusters are where a change has somewhere to go.
Questions people ask
- Is a nicotine pouch the same as snus?
- No. Snus contains tobacco leaf; a nicotine pouch does not. Both are held in the mouth and both deliver nicotine.
- How long is a pouch normally kept in?
- Typically twenty minutes to an hour. Manufacturers print guidance on the tin, and people vary widely within it.
- Does the milligram figure tell me how much nicotine I get?
- It tells you what the pouch contains. How much reaches you depends on placement and how long you keep it in.
